TARGET AUDIENCE:
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, registered nurses and other medical professionals involved in the treatment of breast cancer.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES :

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Select appropriate regimens for the medical management of early breast cancer considering key clinical and pathologic risk factors.
  • Develop treatment plans for patients with early and advanced HER2-positive breast cancer based on the risk-benefit profile of evidence-based HER2-directed agents and the impact of concurrent cytotoxic chemotherapy and endocrine therapies.
  • Incorporate biologic and molecular-targeted therapies in the adjuvant and metastatic settings for appropriately selected patients with breast cancer.
  • Assess the emerging role of adjuvant bisphosphonates in the management of early breast cancer, and identify patients that may benefit from this treatment approach.
  • Review the research supporting the activity of various chemotherapeutic approaches for early and advanced breast cancer, including the contributing roles of taxanes and anthracyclines, and explain the absolute risks and benefits of these regimens to patients.
  • Counsel appropriately selected patients about the availability of ongoing clinical trial participation.
  • Explain the value of tissue-based genomic assays in the care of patients with early breast cancer and, when applicable, use these in the selection of individualized treatment regimens.
  • Apply existing data and emerging research on the optimal duration and sequence of adjuvant endocrine therapy for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer to current patient care decisions.
  • Consider the special needs of patients who are pregnant or are seeking options to preserve fertility when developing treatment algorithms for women with early breast cancer.
